Als Elfie in Michael Kliers Wendedrama "Ostkreuz" (1991) blickt die Jugendliche stirnrunzelnd auf ein Westberlin, das auch nicht anders aussieht als der Osten, aus dem sie mit ihrer Mutter vor dem Mauerfall geflohen ist. Mit diesem Film wird die in Westberlin geborene und aufgewachsene Schauspielerin Laura Tonke zum Jungstar des deutschen Films. Sie dreht mit Tom Tykwer, Dominik Graf, Sönke Wortmann, für die große Leinwand und fürs Fernsehen. Im Jahr 2016 wurde die Verleihung des Deutschen Filmpreises für Laura Tonke zum doppelten Triumph: Sie gewann die goldene Lola für die beste Nebenrolle in Laura Lackmanns Film "Mängelexemplar" und für die Hauptrolle in "Hedi Schneider steckt fest". Ihre Suche nach einer eigenwilligen und dennoch uneitlen Art des Ausdrucks setzt die heute 47-Jährige in der Performance Gruppe Gob Squad erfolgreich fort.
