Der Vater, für das Kind ein Riese, nun ist er alt und dement. Die Familie erlebt einen Rollentausch: Der Vater, zweifach verwitwet, ist wieder Kind geworden. Er braucht Betreuung und wird sein Haus verlassen müssen, denn er vergisst, was gerade eben noch gewesen ist. Immer wieder erzählt er seine Liebesgeschichten, und manchmal fantasiert er.
Nach dem Bestseller ,Leben', ausgezeichnet mit dem Preis der Leipziger Buchmesse, schafft David Wagner mit seinem autobiografisch geprägten neuen Buch ,Der vergessliche Riese' etwas Besonderes: Er zeigt einen Menschen, der - obwohl er nur noch in der Gegenwart lebt und allmählich verschwindet - unverwechselbar bleibt mit all seinen Eigenheiten und den Erinnerungen, die er noch hat. Die Zärtlichkeit, die der Erzähler ihm bei seinen Vater-Besuchen im Rheinland und auf zahlreichen Autofahrten zu Orten der Vergangenheit entgegenbringt - „hier haben wir gewohnt, Papa, hier hast du gearbeitet, hier bist du aufgewachsen" -, berührt, auch die Geduld, der Humor, das Ausbleiben von Hadern und Wut. Fast unmerklich, schreitet die Demenz voran, doch sie verläuft hier ohne Schrecken. Nach einem Gespräch liest David Wagner aus seinem Buch ,Der vergessliche Riese' einen ersten Teil vor.
